I don’t remember being a kid,
the playground,
the games,
the foolish things I did.
I don’t recall a time
when I didn’t think
and plan
and use my mind.
Yet all these youngsters
live in the past
and begin each sentence
with a hash.
Everything was easier,
or so they say,
when they were kids,
just yesterday.

Just a smell
and I am there
back on that summer night
with the rides,
fried food,
and a daunting dare.
Just a sound
and I know
it was then that you
stole my heart,
my mind,
my soul.

Downpour
On the sunny side
it’s easier to enjoy
the downpour of rain.

Jealous
I may have been a little bit jealous
as he put his hand on your leg
and even though you pushed him aside
my heart still started to lag.
I know you had no intention
to go home with anyone but me,
but still it’s hard to believe
that I’m the only one you see.

4am
The shock on my face
when 4am rolled around
and you were here,
full of fury and sound.
How exciting it is
to see my girl here,
since you know how much
I love when you’re near.
But really the truth
is that when you come home
it means I get a fish
then you can leave me alone.

The Sweetest
The sweetest thing about you
is how much you try
and when life gets you down
you get up and don’t cry.
I think about you so much
and I don’t even know why
but it must be because
that’s all one big lie.

Breaking glass
is a messy task
and even more so
when you’re done
since you’ve got
to pick it up
and hope not to cut
anyone.

Leaves
Must be time to leave
without a reason to stay.
Seasons always change.

Sweet Nothings
You whispered in my ear
what I thought was your secret
but really it was your line
used time after time.
I thought it was unique
that you knew what to say
to woo my feelings
and make my heart stray.
But really you are
a dime a dozen
as they say,
and I am worth nothing
thanks to a mistake
for which I’ll pay.

Kryptonite
You were drunk again last night
but you thought I wouldn’t know
like your superpower
is to disguise intoxication.
You’re no superhero
but there is a villain here.
Will you ever realize
your kryptonite
is the exact thing
you think will save you?
Maybe you should use your cape
to clean up the mess
you leave in your wake.
