To My Bird

I taught you the ways of the world

like how to make a human

cater to your every whim.

I taught you to make noise

when you want their attention

really do anything, go out on limb.

I taught you to make messes,

or maybe it was you who shared

the best way to leave the crumbs.

I taught you to cover your ears

whenever there is any noise

including those damn drums.

I taught you all of this and still

it seems as though your lessons

in love were somehow greater.

You helped me become a family cat

but I would still try to eat you

but not because I am a traitor.

So, let it be known, that no other

can ever abuse or attempt harm

to you, my bird and my brother.

So much as a cat can proclaim,

my love to you, I do unless anyone asks

then I don’t even know your name.

The Grass is Greener

No greener grass could grow

than that of my own creation.

Go on, Winter, bring your snow

my grass will grow with elation.

I used to look out the window

and get this kind of sensation

that the grass was greener below

and I would have a temptation.

But now, I most certainly know

it’s not love and dedication

or that I’m reaping what I sow,

it seems to be about hydration

trust me, I’m a cat, I know.

Meow That’s What I Call Music Volume 3

Every cat has its claws

Just like every nap has its end

Just like every stray cat sings a sad, sad song,

Yeah, every cat has its claws.

What’s fish got to do with it

what’s fish but a scrumptious meal for me

what’s fish got to do with it

who needs dessert when tuna is the best.

Oh, I wanna mouse with somebody

I wanna hunt him down with somebody

Yeah, I wanna mouse with somebody

with somebody who pets me.

‘Cause if you like the way you look that much

on, baby, you are probably a cat

and if you think that I am gorgeous too

Well I will go and love myself.

Oh yeah, I’ll tell you something

You don’t need to understand

When I yell that something

I wanna scratch your hand.

A Feline’s Intuition

I see you out there,

no matter what those people say

I can see you and smell you

there is no getting away.

You may think you are clever

and that into the dark you blend

but never forget that a feline

has a nose on which to depend.

So slink away into the night

or stop a while and stare,

but I will always find you

even when my people are not aware.

Behind Green Eyes

All you see is cute ball of fur

who loves the sun and mice.

If only you knew that under

all that fur is not all that nice.

You think that all I need

is sleep and a fish or two

but behind these green eyes

a sadness breaks through.

There is more to being a cat

than could ever meet the eye

after all it’s hard to do much

when I sleep all the time.

Kittens These Days

Kittens these days, they don’t know how easy they’ve got it.

Back when I was just a little kitten, people needed can openers to get into my dinner. Now these people just pull off a cover and it still takes them too long to get my meal ready.

Back in my day, we caught real mice. And we ate them too. Now these kittens seem content with catching a bright pink stuffed creation that hardly resembles a rodent. That stuffing is a little dry when you try to eat it.

Back in my day we chased and ate bugs to our heart’s content. We didn’t chase a little red dot that doesn’t taste like anything. I swear that thing is from the devil anyway.

Back in my day, the cat nip epidemic was nowhere near as bad as today. Sometimes we had it, sometimes we didn’t, but we sure as hell didn’t infuse every one of our belongings with it.

Back in my day we had to walk all the way to the food dish and back to the bed. Uphill both ways. Now it’s breakfast in bed. Wait, maybe that’s just me but I tell you what, kittens, you reach the wise age of 5 and then we will talk.
