Daylight Beckons

The morning fog has lifted
and my coffee’s all but gone.
The songbirds eat their breakfast
and forget about their song.

The day is starting new,
at least for some that’s true,
but my day just adds on
to a night already so long.

My eyes would love to close
and catch a wink or two,
but daylight beckons
and I’ve many things to do.

Evasion

As the night drags on,
it becomes abundantly clear
I’ve got nothing else to say;
my words just disappear.
My brain shuts down,
one neuron at a time,
as my eyes grow heavier
long after their prime.
Sleep finds others
but always evades me
while I wait in darkness
unable to see.

Midnight Oils

Burning the midnight oil
never ends well for me
with my mind in clouded turmoil
and my heart yearning to be free.

Still, I will not close my eyes,
I will not sleep a wink,
until the truth will out the lies
or until my ship will sink.
