For someone who never wanted to play the game,
you sure have the rules down pat.
For someone who never wanted the fame,
you sure know how to tip your hat.
For someone who never needed the praise,
you sure look good on that horse.
For someone who never fell for the craze,
you sure fell right on course.

Two sides of the same coin
and I can’t make heads nor tails
of this flip side of love
to which all else pales.
Find a penny, pick it up
if you want to take a chance,
but luck and love both
tend to fade on second glance.

Heart’s Content
Your steady breathing
and you wrapped up in my arms;
my heart is content.

Race
Every minute
we spend apart
is a skipped beat
in my desperate heart.
And every time
I see your face,
my heart remembers
and starts to race.

Hang
The sun is out
and all the tears have dried
but wounded are the fallen
and their misplaced pride.
A hope so simple
and a dream so dear,
but life is more pragmatic
then what one’s heart will hear.
A battlefield is calling
but there’s not a soldier left
save for blundering
who are little less than deft.
So who will win a war
that started with bang
and ended quickly
with many souls to hang?

Dreams Come True
My girl is gone
one more time
and the house is quiet
and quite divine.
There is no one to wake me
with foolish thoughts
or follow me around
like connect-the-dots.
While I love my girl,
or so she claims,
it’s nice to get away
from such loud dames.
The reason she gives
is a wedding or two
so I’m grateful to love
for making dreams come true.

Just Yesterday
I don’t remember being a kid,
the playground,
the games,
the foolish things I did.
I don’t recall a time
when I didn’t think
and plan
and use my mind.
Yet all these youngsters
live in the past
and begin each sentence
with a hash.
Everything was easier,
or so they say,
when they were kids,
just yesterday.

Just a smell
and I am there
back on that summer night
with the rides,
fried food,
and a daunting dare.
Just a sound
and I know
it was then that you
stole my heart,
my mind,
my soul.

Downpour
On the sunny side
it’s easier to enjoy
the downpour of rain.

Jealous
I may have been a little bit jealous
as he put his hand on your leg
and even though you pushed him aside
my heart still started to lag.
I know you had no intention
to go home with anyone but me,
but still it’s hard to believe
that I’m the only one you see.
